This type of restaurant offers the traditional Brazilian barbecue - churrasco, which is composed of whole cuts of meat that are skewed and barbecued in a “churrasqueira” constructed of bricks. The meat is barbecued and then brought to the table, in a service called a rodízio.
Passadores (meat waiters) roam around the restaurant, each carrying a specific cut of meat. They come to your table with a skewer and every person can then either elect to take some of the meat or pass. For the inexperienced it can become quite an overwhelming experience as skewer upon skewer is provided to the table.
Many different kinds of meat are brought around, usually various cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, duck, seafood, sausage, or any other local types of meats. Make sure to try out the barbecued pineapple with cinnamon and sugar!
The “churrascarias” usually supply, complimentary to the meat, an all-you-can-eat buffet. Typically, the buffet serves salads, rice, beans, and some fish stew. Very often, these establishments also offer pao-de-queijo (similar to biscuit, but with a cheese infused bread. The bread is made of tapioca flour and cheese), and deep fried banana (typical Brazilian treats). Usually they offer Brazilian desserts, such as pudim de leite (milk pudding), passion fruit mousse, quindim (a sweet treat made of egg yolk, sugar, and coconut), and brigadeiro (made of chocolate, condensed milk, eggs, and sugar). It is definitely worth saving room for dessert, if you can!
