Steak House These dining establishments offer the classic Brazilian barbecue, which consists of whole cuts of meat that are skewed and barbecued in a “churrasqueira” made of bricks. Prime rib, tri tip, fillet mignon, shrimp, chicken, pork, lamb, and even pineapple skewed and barbecued to precision in a brick oven and provided at your table, where the waiters cut the meat and serve them on the consumers’ plates. The several cuts of meat keep coming to the customers’ table, where they have the decision to receive a slice of the cut or reject it. The “churrascarias” ordinarily provide, complimentary to the meat, an all-you-can-eat buffet. Typically, the buffet provides salads, rice, beans, and some fish stew. Typically, these houses also offer pao-de-queijo (similar to cheese puffs, a bread made of tapioca flour and cheese), deep fried banana (common Brazilian treats), and baked pineapple - a whole pineapple skewed and coated in sugar and cinnamon and barbecued. Hearts of palm, fresh fruits and vegetables are as well part of the menu.
In Brazil, there are many “bares”, or “barzinhos”, (pubs, little pubs) where people gather for happy hour to have caipirinhas, cocktails, beers and other alcohol.
Snacks are very popular, often they are dependent on the local foods, but many are common everywhere in Brazil. Polenta frita (fried polenta), pao-de-queijo (biscuits baked with cheese inside), salami Italiano, fried chicken wings, cod fish balls (deep fried pastry made with wheat flour, egg, and shredded cod fish), various cheeses, and olive platters.
It is quite typical for bars, called botequins, to have cafe-com-leite (coffee with milk) served in a shot glass, plus fresh french bread with butter for breakfast. This is a very unusual for many people, who are used to pubs as a night time venue.
People usually get together in bars to watch sports events. Normally, these are soccer matches, which happen regularly and not only during the World Cup. Brazil has soccer tournaments throughout the year, and absolutely everyone has their favorite team. It isn't uncommon to see significant numbers of people promoting their team.
Brazilian pubs range from very informal, lower class establishments to very formal, higher end places. Unlike most North American pubs, most of these pubs are wide open to the public with no formal entrance.
The minimum age for drinking in Brazil is 18 years old, and if you look older than 18 it is very likely you won’t be asked to show your ID. Public drinking is allowed in most cities, and public areas.
