Besides the unmistakable American hamburger, Brazilians have crafted their own adaptation of America's favorite meal, simply calling it "X".
Its name originates from cheeseburger, which, influenced by the country's native language, Portuguese, became solely known as "X", and pronounced sheeez. The X-burger is generally much bigger than any burger from well-known fast-food chains around the world. You can select almost any meat to be in the X-burger, include chicken steak, fish steak, chicken hearts, beef steak, strogonoff, various barbecued meats, lamb steak, or even vegetarian. X-burgers include a deep-fried egg, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, straw fries, mayonnaise, mustard, catchup, onions, corn, peas, and much more. It is commonly said that it is very hard to finish a X-burger in one sitting! It is undoubtedly a twist on the typical American variety burger.
Sandwiches are the preferred type of snack in Brazil. While sandwiches are usually a complete meal in North America, they are considered a light snack in Brazil. This is generally due to the way they are prepared, with very little meats, vegetables and cheeses used. They are usually two slices of bread, mayo, some cheese and limited meat. Sandwiches aren't the only type of snack available though!
A small pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common possibilities as well. Some Brazilians even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a smaller meal for most Brazilians.
Sandwiches can also be the Sao Paulo “Beirute” and the Southern Brazil “X-burger”. The latter is much bigger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! The Name cheeseburger comes from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the abbreviation “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a much bigger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular X-burger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” alludes to.
