Catedral Metropolitana in Brasília
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer to be an ecumenical religious center, the Cathedral became a Catholic church that goes beyond the traditional style, for its bold architecture. Located at the beginning of the Ministries, the trademark of Brasilia was inaugurated in 1967 after 12 years of construction. Its circular nave is below ground level and to get there the visitor passes through a tunnel walls and black floor that ends in a place called twilight zone "of meditation. " Only after this passage is that it hits the ship, bathed in natural light filtered through stained glass that form its walls. The Cathedral has a collection of artworks which highlight three angels that hang from the ceiling, sculpted by Alfredo Ceschiatti; Di Cavalcanti 14 panels depicting the Stations of the Cross, the Life of Our Lady, painted by Athos, a replica of the Pieta Michelangelo, the statue of Our Lady of Hope (replica of the image that accompanied Cabral in the discovery of Brazil) and the image of Our Lady of Aparecida, the glass from Marianne Peretti and a copy of the Holy Shroud. The altar was donated by Pope Paul VI, who also blessed a metal cross placed at the top of the temple and it is believed there is a fragment of the cross of Christ. Outside are the Evangelists, four bronze statues of Ceschiatti representing St. Matthew, St. Luke, St. Mark and St. John, the four bells and the steeple, which was donated by immigrants and the Spanish government initially called Santa Maria, Pinta, Niña and Pilarica, and then renamed Our Lady of Aparecida, Porto Seguro, Our Lady of Santana and Our Lady of Pilar.
