Joaquina Beach
Joaquina is an ocean beach in the Brazilian city of Florianopolis, east of Santa Catarina Island, south of Brazil. The point sought by surfers, has been home to some world championship of surfing.
The name of the beach is new, first seen in maps from 1975. Until then, she was called Campeche beach. Praia da Joaquina belongs to the District of Lagoa da Conceição and is only 15 km from downtown Florianopolis in the northeast direction. It has 3,000 meters long and its width varies from 80 to 70 meters. Praia da Joaquina, or Joaca, was discovered by surfers, the first Brazilian and then the foreigners from the 1970s.
Joaquina is one of the most sought after by surfers and sportsmen in general, everyday have football matches in the sand, footvolley, corridors, etc.. Besides having good infrastructure for swimmers, with toilets, showers, police, rescue, night lighting, etc..
Joaquina Beach is also known for creative "surfing on the dunes or sandboarding, a variation of traditional surf and what happens on the big and beautiful dunes bordering the beach. The "Joaquina", as is typically known, begins at the end of the beach of Campeche and its termination happens at Ponta do Retiro.
It is said that the name would have been given in honor of Dona Joaquina, a resident of the eastern shore of the island of Santa Catarina, who taught the other women in the local manufacture of household utensils interlaced lines, besides feeding the fishermen who came to his home.
According to legend, she would have been swallowed by the sea waves in the region. They say that in about 1850 she performed her work on the stones of the shore of that unnamed and deserted beach. One day, distracted by the magic of the place did not notice the time pass and the tide rise enm. She was taken by the sea along with their incomes, which allowed the float to disappear.
This story is told by the tenants of the region and by his descendant, however no documentary proof that the name derives from Joaquina Rosa de Oliveira Costa, daughter of the 2nd. Barons of Laguna, Jesuino Lamego Auta Costa and Leonor de Oliveira. The Baron was a senator from Santa Catarina in the empire, and the family had land in the area. Joaquina Rosa married Antonio Gomes de Mattos Jr., who died in 1893, considered the patron of the Brazilian shipbuilding industry.
