Parque Nacional da Serra Geral
As a way of expanding the protected area of great and famous Brazilian canyons, was created in May 1992, the Parque Nacional da Serra Geral in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
The unit is like an extension of the National Park of Sierra Aparados, which form a larger conservation area.
The size of the area allows for greater effectiveness in combating the constant worrying and hunting activities that were being performed as well as the reduction of fires and deforestation.
With more than 60 canyons, two stand out for their extreme beauty and, therefore, have become famous: the Malacara and Fortaleza, the latter with more than 7 km long and 500 feet tall. They are like an invitation to walks, which should be made well in point: when you get near the edge of each one, there is a feeling of extreme surprise given the observed images.
The region also allows the visitor to meet his attractive neighbor, Parque Nacional da Serra Aparados.
WEATHER
The climate is temperate, without dry season. Average temperatures are between 18 and 20 º C, with highs of 34 to 36 º C and minimum - 8 to - 4 º C. The annual rainfall is between 1500 and 2000 mm.
NATURAL ASPECTS
It has an area of 17,300 hectares, which are formations that originate from intense volcanic activity that occurred millions of years ago.

The relief is accentuated by SC mountains and deep valleys, and the RS is characterized by coxilhas and little valleys. In fields dominated by grasses and, in the Atlantic, includes various species such as the maria-mole and Cangerana. The vegetation is cut by several rivers shallow but perennial, like the waterfall, the Beautiful, the Old Gate, the Father Joseph and Coast New. Among animals, may be noted the maned wolf, cougar and deer, spotted only in places of difficult access, and also others such as the American cougar, also called the Lion-bay, foxes, graxains, opossums, armadillos , apes, etc.. Among the birds are the blue jay, parrot-japan, parakeets, and even some endangered species such as the duck hawk-eagle and gray.
