Sobrado do Doutor José Lourenço
The Dr. Jose Lourenço House, in the center of Fortaleza, presents an exhibition of legitimate pieces of Ceará craft. In addition to providing beauty products, you can also chat with the artisans and learn more about the techniques and history of art. The mansion serves as a unifying center of the visual arts of the state of Ceará, stimulating art and culture of Ceará, having as a starting point, the visual expression. Many artists are invited to show their art in its various representations from the traditional clay to the contemporary art thus representing the state most typical art.
Built in the second half of the XIX century, the house on the Palma Street- current Major Facundo - is witness to different epochs in the history of Ceará. First three-story building built in the state, by Dr. José Lourenço, as it is now called and known, has had multiple uses. It was residence, medical center, carpentry shop, government office, brothel.
The building is neoclassical architectural language and it is one of the highest houses of the old fortress, consisting of three floors. The main facade is crowned with a pediment, the tympanum filled with ornaments phytomorphic, and has windows and tearing his chest wrapped in full arches in the second and third floors, respectively. Among the other houses, the building stands out for having a four water roof prism and by its lateral facades, which have breast windows overlooking neighboring roofs and cornices accompanied by strips of tiles.
In 2006, the manor was restored with the help of students from the School of Arts and Crafts Thomaz Pompeu Sobrinho, who preserved the finials original features, rosettes and tiles, revealing fragments of paintings hidden over the years by successive layers of ink and stories.
The Dr. José Lourenço house comprises along with the Museum of Ceará, the Theatro José de Alencar and the Public Archives of the State of Ceará, a square of the state cultural facilities, located in the central area of Fortaleza, contributing to enhance the historic center the city.

Tuesday to Saturday, from 09:00 am to 7:00 pm. Sundays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
