Iracema Beach in Fortaleza

The boardwalk is always full of people running, jogging,  walking and those just watching the waves come in on Iracema Beach.  There are lots of bars and restaurants which ensure that the area is always busy with people, whether it's night or day.

This is an urban beach, well within the city limits of Fortaleza and with a wide strip of sand which leaves plenty of room for sports, beach games and setting up your beach blanket.  The white sands are soft and the waters warm and mostly calm.

People are attracted to the Metal Bridge at sunset since the views are fantastic and it's a nice way to wrap up a long day at the beach.  The name for Iracema Beach comes from the character Iracema in the novel by José de Alencar Ceará.  Historically, Dutch maps of 1649 show that this was where the native Indians were living when Potiguara Matias Beck and his fleet arrived in what is now Fortaleza. This area has been restored, revitalized and transformed into the Centro Cultural Dragão do Mar.
