Kitesurfing in Cumbuco, Fortaleza

Kitesurf and Windsurfing in Cumbuco and Cauipe is one of the best spots for sailing in the state of Ceará, and perhaps even all of Brazil. Fortaleza is well know for its steady winds that blow across the Atlantic from Africa, but Cumbuco really stands out here, as one of the best spots because of it's constant winds and surfing conditions.

The Caucaia region  of the coast is parallel to the equator, and also parallel to the trade winds, which passes through Cumbuco with full force, because there are no natural barriers formed by the mainland.   The lack of natural barriers is the primary reason that these winds can run down the coastline at full force.

The Cauipe Lagoon, in the Caucaia region, with its clean and very calm waters has a very good area to take off and land kites, unimpeded by buildings or concrete, just sand and coconut trees cover the beaches here.   The lagoon is formed by the Cauípe river and is very popular with anyone involved in these water sports and due to the activity and popularity there are several tents setup at the southern tip that sell food and refreshments to the beach goers.

The size of the pond is approximately  75m x 250m, which is on the smaller side and which can become pretty packed on the weekends, due to the many wind surfers, swimmers and sunbathers. The best times to visit are early in the day, from 8:00 to 11:00 and then the 16:00 to 17:00.  During the week, there are really just kite surfers.

Beginners can take courses here and use the pond for practicing kit surfing.  The kite surfing school is locally owned and a great place to learn the first steps to this fun sport.  The pond is great for beginners, and the surrounding coastline great for those who already have experience.  If you're looking for a great place to try out kite surfing, make sure to stop by this little kite surfing paradise.

As for the weather, it's always between 27C and 32C with constant windws.  The perfect beach going weather year round!   Not many beaches can boast this, and offer up water sports year round.  Even though there are winds year round, the best times are from July to January with the strongest winds in mid-September.  From July to January it hardly ever rains, the rainy season beings in February and ends in April, but even during the rainy season it only rains for short periods throughout the day.

There are  three ways to get from Cumbuco: by the beach with a buggy,  through a path that crosses the dunes, since the pavement is not great, or at the fork in the road (unmarked) a few km's after the entrance to the Banana Lagoon.

Jericoacoara is considered one of the major points for kitesurfing, getting practitioners of the sport worldwide, but the best beach to practice is the Preá, a small fishing village roughly 12 km east of Jericoacoara at the entrance to the National Park. It is the ideal place because it has winds and currents "side on shore", and miles of sandy beach without obstacles. The largest waves can reach up to one meter and during low tide the water conditions are considered flat.

The site also offers downwinders up to 12 km toward the village of Jericoacoara, perfect for surfing the waves. For the more experienced who also like to vary their activities, there are several options for the sport.  All this taking advantage of the beautiful beaches, small fishing villages and wonderful downwinders!

In Jericoacoara you can find schools and specialized instructors, along with guards and equipment rental.
