This type of restaurant offers the normal Brazilian barbecue - churrasco, which is made of whole cuts of meat which are skewed and barbecued in a “churrasqueira” built of bricks. The meat is cooked and then brought to the table, in a service called a rodízio.
Passadores (meat waiters) roam around the establishment, handling a specific cut of meat. They come to your table with a skewer and each one can then either choose to take a slice of the dish or pass. For the inexperienced it can become quite an overwhelming experience as skewer upon skewer is provided to the table.
Many kinds of meat are brought around, typically various cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken, duck, seafood, sausage, or any other local types of meats. Make sure to try out the barbecued pineapple with cinnamon and sugar!
The “churrascarias” typically offer, complimentary to the meat, an all-you-can-eat buffet. Normally, the buffet serves salads, rice, beans, and some fish stew. Very often, these restaurants also offer pao-de-queijo (similar to biscuit, but with a cheese infused bread. The bread is made of tapioca flour and cheese), and deep fried banana (typical Brazilian treats). They also offer Brazilian desserts, such as pudim de leite (milk pudding), passion fruit mousse, quindim (a sweet treat made of egg yolk, sugar, and coconut), and brigadeiro (made of chocolate, condensed milk, eggs, and sugar). It is certainly worth saving room for dessert, if you can!
In Brazil, there are several “bares”, or “barzinhos”, (pubs, little pubs) where people gather for happy hour to have caipirinhas, cocktails, beers and other cold beverages.
Snacks are commonplace, frequently they are dependent on the local foods, but many are popular all over Brazil. Polenta frita (fried polenta), pao-de-queijo (biscuits baked with cheese inside), salami Italiano, fried chicken wings, cod fish balls (deep fried pastry made with wheat flour, egg, and shredded cod fish), various cheeses, and olive platters.
It is quite typical for bars, called botequins, to have cafe-com-leite (coffee with milk) served in a shot glass, plus fresh french bread with butter for breakfast. This is a fairly unusual for many people, who view pubs as a night time venue.
People typically get together in bars to watch sports events. Commonly, these are soccer matches, which occur frequently and not only during the World Cup. Brazil has soccer tournaments throughout the year, and everybody has their favorite team. It isn't uncommon to see large numbers of people wearing team jerseys.
Brazilian pubs range from very informal, lower class establishments to very formal, higher end places. Unlike most North American pubs, most of these pubs are wide open to the public with no formal entrance.
The minimum age for drinking in Brazil is 18 years old, and if you look older than 18 it is very likely you won’t be asked to show your ID. Public drinking is allowed in most cities, and public areas.
