Estátua de Augusto Severo - Natal Historic
The following is transcribed from the book "New History of Natal" by Itamar de Souza, P. 240-241, in which he talks about the Statue of Augusto Severo:
"This time the honor of the great aviation pioneer Alberto Maranhão governor's left, started in his first government (1900-1904), more precisely in 1902 and completed its second government (1908-1913). Augusto Severo died in Paris in May 1902. in July of that year, was organized in a Natal Patriotic Committee commissions that spread in almost all municipalities in the state in order to collect donations for the construction of a monument to the illustrious consagado Rio Grande do Norte. Hundreds of people from all segments of society participated in this campaign RN.
In October 1907, the famous sculptor and baritone, Corbinian Vilaça Patriotic presented to this Committee a grand design to honor the airman Natal. The design was suggested that the monument should measure eight feet high and twelve square meters. But to be very expensive, the said project was rejected. Years later, he was running a smaller project, known popularly as the statue of Augustus Severus, who, even today, beautify your square. It is a bronze statue in which the honoree is standing with his left hand in his pocket and the right holding his hat, looking toward the river Potengi. A granite pedestal, cylindrical in shape, measuring about two meters or more in height, the statue allows the airman to be seen by passers-by far. On the side of the granite pedestal that is looking for Bus Station (now the Museum of Culture Potiguar), is written as follows: The AUGUSTO SEVERO, STATE. "
