Natal Historic Center Church

The Church of Our Lady of the Presentation, located in the hill from where Jeronimo de Albuquerque implemented the city. Stands out in the urban landscape of the current square André de Albuquerque, former Grand Street, the beginnings of Natal in the middle of the City Cultural Centre.

The temples and monuments listed by the State Government and belongs to the Archdiocese of Natal. However, it became much more than a house of worship, became a monument to the Rio Grande do Norte is proud to own and display, and it constituted one of the few churches built in Brazil in the early seventeenth century.

The chapel that gave rise to the present church was built in 1599. There was celebrated the Mass of the foundation of Natal Town.

The first provided vicar in the parish of Our Lady of the Presentation, was Father Gaspar Gonçalves da Rocha, as contained in the Compendium of Ambrose Smith of Revenue and Expenditure of the State of Brazil, 1605 document.

Some time after construction of the original chapel is projected to a new church, with higher dimensions. In 1619 the temple was inaugurated expanded.

In the period 1633 to 1654, the Dutch dominated the Flagship of the Rio Grande. At the time Natal had only 40 houses. The Church of Our Lady of the Presentation became a Calvinist church, from preaching preacher held by Johanna on December 18, 1633.

Flemish expelled the invaders, the Flagship in 1654, they destroyed everything they could, including books, records pertaining to the church.

Father Leonardo Tavares de Melo was the first vicar of the Matrix home after the Portuguese reconquest. He came to the Flagship of the Rio Grande in 1656, reportedly in the registry Date of Grant of the Senate and the House Sesmaria Natal, dated January 2, 1660.

The new vicar just handled the recovery of the church, but the works were only completed in 1694.

The patron saint of Natal is Our Lady of the Presentation, your image goes back to the seventeenth century and reached the city floating inside a wooden box, on November 21, 1753. Which is why the image is, in fact, Our Lady of the Rosary, is now venerated as the "Presentation".
