On September 8 Curitiba pays homage to its patron saint, Our Lady of Light of the Pines. (Nossa Senhora da Luz dos Pinhões). The citizens belief in the Saint is so great that they do not celebrate the city foundation anniversary, but dedicate the day to the Patroness of Curitiba, instead. That's because in September 8th, 1993, after restoration, the gothic style church of Nossa Senhora da Luz completed 100 years and became the Our Lady of the Light Cathedral in Curitiba. located in Tiradentes Square, the birthplace of Curitiba.
Curitiba Patron Saint Day Festival of Light is celebrated with extensive artistic and religious programming. Processions, masses in honor of Our Lady in the Basilica with the Blessing of Families, religious attractions, food and crafts fairs, fireworks, music shows and other entertainment options are part of the holiday festivities.
