The name of Heath Mother of God was given because of an accident of geography. It is a valley formed by the mountains of Prata, Estrago and Amaro where a priest of São Felipe Nery congregation founded a hospice on the banks of the creek named as Mother of God.

Due to its rocky formation, with dry ground and cold the climate, the Brejo da Madre de Deus (Mother of God Heath) has also served as the backdrop for several movies. We highlight some productions rounds in the city as the films "The Night of the Scarecrow," "Land without God," "Revenge of the 12" and "Blood Creek" in addition to the clip recorded by singer-songwriter Lenine.

This city is also famous for religious feeling, with churches, cathedrals, as well as Easter and the feast of St. Joseph, patron of the city. In the city center, it is essential to know the colonial houses, with Portuguese tiles facades of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century and its ceramic cones. The museum of local history is a big house, with walls covered in Portuguese tiles, housing parts of characters in the history of the Brejo, local artworks can also be purchased by tourists visiting the museum.

However, the biggest attraction is the theater of the city of New Jerusalem. The building is a replica of the holy Jerusalem, with artificial lakes, a great wall with 3 feet tall and 12 stone towers. This theater is the largest on the planet. Every year during Holy Week, the show takes place in the Passion of Christ, where they staged the last days of Jesus' life, recording the presence of more than two hundred thousand people at the show.
