Ballroom dancing at Gafieira Estudantina

Gafieira Estudantina was created in the '20s, more precisely in the year 1928. Founded by a law student, which is derived the name "Estudantina MUSICAL," was home to the popularization of Brazilian music in the midst of intellectuals and bohemians.

Originally opened in Paysandu Street, was, years later, transferred to Praça José de Alencar. In 1942 he was transferred to Tiradentes Square, where on the left of No. 75 remained with their activities until 1968 when, due to the invasion of music and foreign rhythms, all the houses of the genre began to sink, bringing them almost to the total disappearance .

In 1972, Spaniard Isidro Fernández Page is to direct the famous gaff Elite, which was already almost at the point of closing the doors, getting thus reverse the situation and revive the traditional and successful face of ballroom dancing.

In 1978, the same Isidro then inaugurated the new "Estudantina," now located on the second floor of No. 79 in the same square, still remaining on the same path.

Then turned bright night in Tiradentes Square, where, through the wistful Marie Antoinette, many dancers have made famous, getting some, to gain international recognition would. Thereafter, the name of the gaff was taken all over Brazil, gaining prominence in many countries around the world.

Currently, Estudantina is widely recognized, not only for being the forerunner of ballroom dancing but also for being home to major attractions. Personalities come and worship dance, from all parts of the world to know his grand space. Successful singers and songwriters have gone through this stage to be honored, among them: Luiz Gonzaga, Baden Powell, Hermeto Pascoal, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and many others. International artists such as Liza Minelli already marked their presence on our stage. Furthermore, our room was used in recording the great films like: "Opera do Malandro," "What's that fellow" among others. Were also recorded several TV Globo's soap operas like "America", "O Clone", "Belly of Rent," "Body and Soul" and "Passage to India", all written by the illustrious writer Gloria Perez.

22/10/2008 From the day that the stage of Estudantina Musical named after the singer Maria Bethania, this honor in appreciation for his contribution to Brazilian popular music.

Democratic par excellence, supports all citizens without discrimination of any kind. All the rhythms are heard in its halls, including those outside, such as tango, bolero, salsa, etc.. The traditional poster, with the statutes of Gafieira, is still hanging on the wall, warning the unwary not allowed kisses and bumps in the lounge. There are still found the waltz-feet, the legs of nerve and some folk figures that wearing white pants, silk shirt, shoe bicolor and Panama hat, dancing with their handkerchiefs in hand, ready to wipe his brow. 

All this makes Estudantina the principal place of affirmation and strengthening of ballroom dancing in Rio de Janeiro.

The Musical Estudantina is, without doubt, the reference of ballroom dancing, which is now officially recognized by the City as Intangible Heritage of the State of Rio de Janeiro. In December 2011, the house eighty-three year history.
