Sao Conrado Beach
The official name is Gávea Beach, and this beach begins at the end of Avenida Niemeyer, stretching for three km, and ending at the São Conrado tunnel. The city started a project in 2002 to fight the pollution in this area and promote a more tourist area. The sands are clear and soft which are great for walking along and the ocean is rough with strong waves which is ideal for surfing.
There is 2km of pavement to walk along that borders the beach, with almond trees, benches and a seperate bike path. A few kiosks exist along the way selling food and beverages. Look for the staging area that is used for landing hang gliders and para gliders. They take off from the mountains and glide all through the city, finally ending at the beaches in desginated areas.
At night, there is poor lighting, and behind the high end condos is the Favela da Rocinha, so caution should be taken when traveling at night.
