Petrópolis
Located 68 km from Rio, Petrópolis was discovered in 1830 by Emperor D. Peter I. Delighted with the climate and the beauty of the place, the imperial family bought a farm there. Thirteen years later, King Pedro II gave rise to the city, built to host the Court. Even today Petrópolis keeps the charm of those glory days, with the aristocratic mansions of the barons, earls and viscounts, located near the Imperial Palace - now a beautiful museum, where there is the collection of the Imperial times, and whose facade serves as a stage to the Sound and Light Show.
Beyond the Imperial Museum, be sure to visit the Casa de Santos Dumont, the Quitandinha, the Crystal Palace, the Cathedral of St. Peter of Alcantara, the Rio Negro Palace and the homes of the Baron of Maua , Princess Elizabeth and Rui Barbosa.
The imposing Castle of the Baron of Itaipava, 15 km from the center, is also worth a visit. The kids will enjoy strolling through the park Cremerie, a recreation area where there are paddle boats in the lagoon and toys throughout the green area. In Itaipava there are good hotels, fine restaurants and a wide range of ceramics, furniture, decoration, antiques and crafts, as well. Some noteworthy Petropolitan events are the Bauernfest and the Winter Festival, which take advantage of the cold weather to attract more tourists to the city. Enjoy local nature is another excellent program: you can go rafting in Paraibuna River, rappeling down the Veil of the Bride waterfall , riding in ecological stud Analu and trekking through the region that connects the Cuiabá valley to Teresopolis city houses the Serra dos Órgãos National Park.
