Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim

Donated to the State Government in 1983, six months before the death of the owner Laura Alvim, the house was transformed into a Cultural Centre and inaugurated on May 12, 1986. Today belongs to FUNARJ / Anita Mantuano Arts Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro, bound to the Secretary of State for Culture.

Woman ahead of her time, Laura wanted to be an actress, but her family never allowed. Decided to make this a frustration stimulus: he built a house on the premises of the stage, where recited and played for friends, promoted meetings between veterans and young artists, always encouraging the culture.

With 2,000 square feet of building area, the Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim was opened with an art gallery, auditorium, museum, theater, basement (now Space Rogério Cardoso) and constant activities in the arcades, which soon became a center for art this point reference for artists and intellectuals in Rio de Janeiro.

Administered by the Secretary of State and Culture, the Culture House Laura Alvim houses a cafe, a bookstore, three cinemas, Theatre Laura Alvim (245 seats), the Space Rogerio Cardoso (70 seats), the Art Gallery Laura Alvim Laura and Museum, with permanent exhibition of furniture and personal belongings of Laura and her family.

Theatres

The Theatre is a Laura Alvim Cultural Center Annex. The place is one of the spaces designed by Ms. Laura Agostini Villalba Alvim, in order to accommodate classic European drama. Laura oversaw the construction of the theater, at first, and gave rise to the architectural style that was eventually followed by the State Government in completing the works.

The walls are made of stones and the 245 seats were designed by Oscar Niemeyer. Great shows have been staged in the area - among them Four times Beckett, Quartett, Brazilian Musical Theater, Mary Stuart, Tristan and Isolde and Queen of the Night.

Besides Theater Laura Alvim, there is also space Rogério Cardoso, a room with capacity for 70 people in the 'basement' of the House, which is used for alternative shows.

The Gallery

Gallery Laura Alvim underwent a complete makeover. The four rooms, with a total of approximately 120 square feet, was reopened in March this year, after eight months of work. Besides installing a new cooling system, the work included installation of new railings and lighting, and restoration of wood floors and marble.

The gallery reopened in March 2009, gaining a new profile of the center for contemporary art, curated by Ligia Canongia, which created a special program for the space.
