It was in 1661 that came to Bahia Portuguese six monks of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, who followed him to Angola. They stayed in Salvador for a few months and good relationship with its inhabitants created the conditions for the installation of a convent in the city. The idea materialized and the Convent of St. Teresa of Avila was built between 1667 and 1676, in prime location with a great view over the Bay of All Saints. The inauguration of the Church took place on 15 October 1697. In the nineteenth century, by reducing the number of monks, the Order into decline and in 1837 the Archdiocese decided to install in the building Archdiocesan Seminary. In 1957, the Rector of the Federal University of Bahia, Professor Edgar Santos, decides to create, associated with the University, a museum of sacred art in order to preserve the Luso-Brazilian sacred art. It was then signed with the Archdiocese of Salvador partnership agreement with a duration of 60 years. The Museum of Sacred Art of the university was inaugurated on August 10, 1959. The organization and its direction entrusted to the Benedictine historian D. Clemente, Maria da Silva Nigra. Today, MAS / UFBA is consolidated and recognized as one of the most important museums of its kind in the Americas, not only for its rare and precious collection of Christian sacred art, but also to be housed in one of the most prominent architectural seventeenth-century Brazilian . The entire set is listed by the Institute of National Artistic Heritage - IPHAN as national heritage since 1938, located in the historic center of Salvador, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1985.
