When Brazilians go out to eat American food, it usually consists of such dishes as hot dogs, hamburgers, apple pies, and other comfort foods. Be aware, that the dishes likely won't be typical! They will have Brazilian twists, which will often make them fairly unique!
Sandwiches are the most popular type of snack in Brazil. While sandwiches are normally a meal in North America, they are considered a light snack in Brazil. This is generally due to the way they are prepared, with limited meats, vegetables and cheeses used. They are usually two slices of bread, mayo, cheese and limited meat. Sandwiches aren't the only type of snack available though!
A little pastel, pao-de-queijo, or a croquete (ground beef breaded and deep fried) are common alternatives as well. Some people even have sandwiches for dinner, which is always a considerably smaller meal for most Brazilians.
Sandwiches can also be the Sao Paulo “Beirute” and the Southern Brazil “X-burger”. The latter is much bigger than a regular cheeseburger and may also be filled with a variety of meats, from chicken, to beef, to pork, and even chicken hearts! Hamburgers comes from the way Brazilians pronounce “cheese”, which evolved into the shortened version “X” (sheeez). The Beirute is a much bigger sandwich. This sandwich is toasted and also much larger than a regular X-burger. It has a Arab influence, as the name “Beirute” implies.
