Centro Cultural Sao Paulo

Initially designed to house an extension of Mário de Andrade Library, Centro Cultural São Paulo suffered in the course of its construction, a series of changes to become one of the first multidisciplinary cultural venues in the country.

Opened in 1982, offers theater, dance and music, visual arts exhibitions, film and video projections, workshops, debates and courses, and maintains significant collections in their care of the city of Sao Paulo: The City Art Collection , the Disco Oneyda Alvarenga, the collection of Folklore Research Mission Mário de Andrade, the Multimedia Archive and a set of libraries that occupies an area of more than 9000 m².

The complete construction of the building, as predicted in the original project was never completed. Nevertheless, the CCSP has established itself as a center of support for experimental productions, a meeting point for artists, a place of coexistence that has taken the form of extension of people's homes.

Located in a strategic point of the city, crossed between the Vergueiro Street and 23 de Maio Avenue, close to Avenida Paulista and next to two subway stations, the institution has a significant number of visitors. Its diversified program, offered free or at reasonable prices, attracts people of different tracks, making the CCSP a more democratic cultural spaces of the city. In 2009, it received more than 819 000 users, comparable to a visitation of the greatest museums and cultural centers of the world.

With four floors and an area of 46,500 square meters, its architectural design is distinguished by the way it integrates with the urban space. The project architects Luiz Benedito Telles and Eurico Prado Lopes dissolves the building in the topography of the land. Without barriers, invites passersby to enter. To break the rigidity of the concrete and steel, widely used in construction, architectural design foresaw huge glazed and hollow spaces, letting in natural light, and still kept,  in the center of the building, a garden of 700m2, where the original vegetation was preserved.

The Centro Cultural São Paulo offers many free activities such as art exhibitions, workshops, debates and lectures. The theater, dance and music can be free or offered at reasonable prices that do not exceed the amount of R$ 20. For more information, the user should consult the desired event on schedule.
