Republic Square in São Paulo

The Republic Square is one of the more traditional points of São Paulo. Located in the center of the city, it is visited daily by people of many different styles that take advantage to know the famous place that holds some of the history of the metropolis.

It was formerly known as the "Largo dos Curros". There, the nineteenth-century São Paulo inhabitants enjoyed watching rodeos and bullfights of the season. Since then the space name has changed several times. It has been called Largo da Palha, Militiamen Square, April 7 Square, November 15 Square and finally, in 1889, it was named Republic Square.

Built from the European model of urbanization, the place, which makes a link between the old center and the new center, was chosen in 1894 as the address of the Caetano de Campos Normal School. The beautiful building designed by Ramos Azevedo is currently the headquarters of the State Department of Education.

What makes this part of the center even more known is its Art and Craft Fair, on Saturdays and Sundays from 9h to 17h.

Currently the Republic Square revitalization involves works that aim to improve the use of space for rest and recreation of the population.
