Pope Square
In Belo Horizonte, do not ask for Praça Israel Pinheiro. "Never heard of it," is what will probably respond.
Try "Square of the Pope," and will point upward. Not for the sky, but almost: the square is more than a thousand feet, at the foot of the Sierra Corral.
From up there, in 1980, then the successor of St. Peter in Rome and Patriarch exclaimed in rapture, "that Belo Horizonte." The Catholic influence on the name change did take: Ready, Plaza of the Pope.
It is one of the highest points of the city, in both directions. The overview of the state capital from the top is one of the best postcards of the city.
It is the right address for tourists and also for Belo Horizonte. Traditionally the site is dedicated to the romance of couples miners and kites the boys weekend.
It has become a place to practice some sports. Mainly longboard, you can enjoy the long hills that surround the square.

At first it may seem like a quiet spot for assignations and consumption of edible trinkets sold by street vendors. But the privileged view of the Pope Square makes an interesting place for any kind of outdoor activity.
