Given a long-standing demand of the artistic community of Bahia, was referred to the Legislative Assembly of Bahia Bill No. 432 proposing the creation of the Teatro Castro Alves on July 2, 1948. The work began in 1957 with the authorship of the project architects and Bina Fonyat Humberto Lopes, who received an honorable mention at the time the 1st Biennial of Fine Arts Theatre in São Paulo. Was responsible for the construction company Norberto Odebrecht work, which officially handed over to the government's work in the year following the start of construction, with opening scheduled for July 14, 1958. But five days before the big event in the early morning of 09/07/58, the theater suffered a tragic fire that destroyed the entire electro-mechanical part of the largest and best home show in Brazil at the time.

Time passes and the tragedy is left behind. Begins to rebuild the theater rises again, recovering slowly destroyed hopes. After nine years closed, the ACT was inaugurated on March 4, 1967 with redoubled joy and celebration. Presence of Castelo Branco and the governor Lomanto Junior. Memorable shows were held in the ACT as the realization of a busy show with Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque, which resulted in disc recorded live, and the historical presentation of Veloso and Gilberto Gil on Brazil's farewell before leaving for exile in England, 70 years.

In July 1989, after a concert by the Symphony Orchestra of Bahia with the participation of the Sons of Afoxé Gandhy, the Theatre closed for renovations, and reopened in July 1993. On opening night concert with the Symphony Orchestra of Bahia and the Bahia show Joao Gilberto, Maria Bethania and Gal Costa, who took turns on stage during the show.

The largest collection of its kind in the country, the complex of the Castro Alves Theater, located in the central city of Salvador, has in its main hall with 1,554 seats, one of the largest and best equipped theaters in the Americas, as well as a theater small - the choir room with 197 seats, an acoustic shell for the great spectacles, which includes more than 5,000 spectators, large Foyer, Center for Memory, rehearsal rooms, Hanging Garden, Clearance and Technical Center, which gives support for their productions and other performing arts of the state in terms of creation and construction of sets, costumes and props. The complex also has the Scenographic Warehouse, located at the convention center. TCA has two permanent artistic groups, the Symphonic Orchestra of Bahia - OSBA Ballet Company and the ACT - BTCA.

In addition to projects carried out regularly, as the TCA Series, Sunday Conversation, and TCA plugged in all the spaces of the complex are home to other shows and events through the system of assignment of scores.
