Chapada Diamantina Park in Salvador
Description: Chapada Diamantina Park in Salvador

At the heart of the Brazilian state of Bahia, are the Chapada Diamantina, a region of mountains, where many rivers are born, including the Paraguaçu Jacuípe and Contas Rivers.  These small streams of water from natural springs slide down these mountains forming beautiful streams that tumbe over waterfalls and form bubbling transparent pools, only to continue on through the state to the ocean.

The national park is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. The vegetation is lush, composed of species of savanna and semi-arid mountain flora, especially bromeliads, orchids and evergreens. Some natural attractions are simply spectacular, such as the Smokey Falls with its 380 meters of waterfalls or the gorgeous Enchanted Well.   There are so many attractions that it's impossible to do everything on one outting.  Visiting caves, bathing in waterfalls, trekking on old miners trails, horseback riding or simply playing sports in the open green areas.  The plateau holds together valleys, ridges, and alternative communities like the Capon Valley.

The two highest points in the state are here, Pico do Barbado at 2,033 meters, which is the highest point in the northeast and the Pico das Almas at 1958 meters.  Simply walking, breathing in the fresh air and admiring the landscape are the primary tourist activities who visit the highlands.   Crystal clear waters, colored sands, beautiful hills, flowers and Brazilian vegetation await all who visit these majestic mountains.

If you're interested in nature, trekking and enjoying the great outdoors, make this national park a stop on your tour of Brazil.
