Catedral Metropolitana
Description: Catedral Metropolitana

One of the most beautiful buildings in the city, the Catedral Metropolitana is located at Praça XV de Novembro.  The Catedral Metropolitana was built on the same site as a former chapel, built in 1678 by the towns founder and explorer, Francisco Dias Velho.  The original design was by José da Silva Paes, who was also the first governor of this ancient state.   The cathedral is a heritage building, listed by the state and the municipality as such.

It has undergone several restoration projects, with one of the last major ones in 1992.  The original building, masonry arches, and elaborate wooden doors of the Chapel were all restored with their neoclassical lines.

There is a significant collection of religious art at teh Catedral Metropolitana, including a sculpture titled "Flight into Egypt, " carved in cedar wood in Tyrol, Austria by the artist Demetz, and which has been there since 1902.   A German pipe organ dating back to 1922, and stained glass windows made in Sao Paulo in 1949.
