HOUSE OF BENIN Located midway between the House of Jorge Amado and staircases honored film The Payer of Promises is the House of Benin. The House of Benin plays an important role in strengthening ties between Bahia and African nations, and to promote cultural exchange. Benin, formerly Dahomey came the most slaves arrived here. The acarajé, one of the highlights of Bahian cuisine is a contribution of these men and women Beninese. History of the House of Benin Opened in 1988, after the reform carried out by the architect Lina Bo Bardi - who kept the lines outside the houses but modernized secular spaces - houses a rich collection of objects and works of art in the Gulf of Benin, where did the majority of blacks who populated the Recôncavo. Most of the collection was collected by French photographer and anthropologist Pierre Verger in their travels around the African continent. The house also houses temporary exhibitions and art workshops. There is a library specializing in African and Afro-Brazilian Culture. Foundation president Gregorio de Mattos, the time of the inauguration of the house, was the current Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil.
