Genipabu Beach in Natal
Description: Genipabu Beach in Natal

Some amazing sights can be found at Genipabu beach, with its huge dunes and fresh water lagoons, this beach is full of fun and natural beauty.  Genipabu beach is also where one of the most famous post card pictures was taken for the entire Rio Grande do Norte.   It is very likely you will see Genipabu beach on many post cards around the city because of the huge diversity of scenery.

Huge dunes and fresh water lagoons offer up a unique area which is only 25 km north of downtown Natal in the city of Extremoz.  The dunes and lagoon are visited by many of the dune buggy tours and offer up a fun activity called esquibunda.  Participants sit on wooden plates at the top of these large dunes and slide down the dunes directly into the refreshing fresh water lagoons at the bottom.  It's exciting, fun and a great way to beat the heat.   Ask your local dune buggy operator to take you to these locations.  Although, it's likely already on his agenda of sights to show you at Genipabu beach.

There are often caravans of dune buggies operating on the beach and dunes, all following a pretty set out course.  They are a lot of fun, and a great way to see the natural beauty of the whole area, including Genipabu beach and it's surrounding white sandy dunes.  When you enter the buggy, the driver will simply ask if you want the ride "with emotion or without emotion", which basically means how exciting do you want your tour to be.   Personally, I think the buggy operators just ignore your suggestions because they all seem to love the with emotion rides for themsevles.  The buggy tours go all over, stopping at various lagoons, tucked away oasis's where little juice stands are setup, zip line style rides, and many great views of the whole area.   Only accredited professionals are allowed to do these tours for safety reasons and they are also the only ones that are allowed into several areas that are also private property.  The tours are well worth it, and highly recommended.

Like all dunes, the Dunes of Genipabu beach are mobile.  The action of the wind, which is often very intense in the north, moves the sand around, which in turn creates new dunes and a new landscape.  If you come back after several years, all of the major dunes will have shifted around.  Make sure you take the time to check out Genipabu beach, it's well worth it, and you won't regret it!
