Carnaval de Recife

Carnival in Olinda - Recife

In Recife, the Carnval activities are completely decentralized, with performers found  around the city.  The quality of the groups is impeccable, and there are variety of performances to enjoy, all being free and open to the public.  Carnival groups, can be found performing on stages, with artists and orchestras.  Carnaval Multicultural do Recife is found to be one of the  largest and most democratic parties around the globe.  The activities are fun, comfortable, safe and conviant for those visiting the city.

The pre-carnival is filled with performances, rehearsals and workshops in the Neighborhood Living Project, held in the courtyard of St. Peter's Square at the Naval Arsenal and within the communities that host the maracatus.  In February, the party really heats up, with more party fever, Maracatu, Samba and Afoxé.  This very popular event is very significant in the cultural history of Recife, and has plenty of great performances for everyone to enjoy, or the entire event.

The performances of the traditional drummers from Maracatu and Afoxé, provid a beautiful expression of African-Brazilian culture, and one of the most popular rhythms in Brazil - Samba; Caboclinho is a manifestation that mixes African and indigenous heritages.

The joining of different rhythms continues with rehearsals of orchestras and dancers and can by found all around the Coin Street Square and the Navy Arsenal.  Plan accordingly and ensure you have accommodations setup before arriving.  The event is popular and will surely make it hard to find anything once you have arrived.   The carnival and rehearsals offer plenty of time for visitors to enjoy and bathe themselves in culture, history, music and performances.
