Christ Redeemer
One of the most famous land marks in all of South America, the Christ Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, which located at the peak of the 2300 foot high Cocovado Mountain and over looks all of Rio de Janeiro. The Christ Redeemer is considered the second largest Art Deco statue in the world, standing 130 feet tall. The statue was originally constructed between 1922 and 1931 and is now one of the largest tourist attractions in all of Brazil.

Christ the Redeemer, symbol of the city of Rio de Janeiro, was elected as one of the New 7 Wonders of the Modern World, in voting conducted through the Internet and mobile messages, organized by the New 7 Wonders Foundation in Switzerland, among 21 participants of monuments the entire planet.
And the choice was well deserved. From its 38 meters - and 710 meters from the Morro do Corcovado - Christ is the image of faith and sympathy of the people of Rio and complete in 2007, 76 years. Since 2000, when it received new lighting, the monument and its accesses are undergoing a revitalization process. The highlight was the inauguration of mechanized access in 2002, with panoramic elevators and escalators. So, you no longer need to face the 220 steps leading to the statue's feet.
The Statue of Christ now has three panoramic elevators, each with a capacity for 14 people. Access is through an area that serves both those who arrive by car and those who arrive at the train platform of the railroad of the Corcovado. It was also built metal walkways, supported by another structure, approximately four feet wide and four escalators, with traffic capacity of 9,000 people per hour. The tour starts there, for the tower, 31 meters tall, will uncover the first view of the city. To finally get the statue, four escalators were installed.
And even before reaching the Christ, visitors can learn about the history of the postcard. Cosme Velho station, completely renovated and turned into an atmosphere of leisure and entertainment modern and comfortable. A new pier was built, besides tourist stores, VIP rooms and an auditorium. The highlight is the Cultural Center, where the entire rich history of the Railroad and the Monument.
