RioZoo
The Rio de Janeiro Zoo is the oldest zoo in Brazil. It turned 65 years old on March 18 20105. When one crosses Quinta da Boa Vista Park, which was the Royal Portuguese family's residence, and walks through its gate with archs and columns one feels like going to another country and another ime in History. To walk to its alleys surrounded by imperial palm trees is like to get into the pages of a a live picture book with stories of emperors, princesses, slaves, and all kinds of common people who opened the ways to build, throughout the years, what Brazil is today.
The RioZoo offers a unique mixture of history and extravagance. It all started on January 16, 1888, when Barão de Drumond founded in the neighborhood of Vila Isabel, in Rio de Janeiro, the first Brazilian Zoo. It was an area with creeks, artificial lakes, and an extensive collection of animals.
