Acervo Artistico e Cultural do Palacio dos Bandeirantes

Palácio dos Bandeirantes is the seat of the government of São Paulo and the governor’s official residence.

Architecture

The first architectural concept for Palácio dos Bandeirantes was conceived by Italian architect Marcello Piacentini, in 1938. He was commisioned by Count Francisco Matarazzo’s nephew and the construction was meant to house Count Francesco Matarazzo School of Commerce, to celebrate the centenary of this renonwed Italian immigrant. It featured abstract lines, columns, plain walls and an imposing facade.

In the Fifties, engineer Francisco da Nova Monteiro was in charge of the project and changed its concept to a Neoclassic, eclectic style construction. The foundation stone was laid in 1954 and the construction continued during the following years but the college itself was never settled, due to the financial difficulties that Matarazzo Group was facing at the time.

Use of the building

By the beginning of the Sixties, the Matarazzo Group started to negotiate the dispossession of the building with the state government , as a means of paying tax debts. The Palace was to serve three purposes: as seat of the Executive Power, an administrative center and the governor’s official residence.Nowadays is has also the function of a Museum open to the public.

Acquiring the works of art

On March 30th, 1970, during Governor Abreu Sodré’s term of office, the palace became the definitive seat of the government and was named Palácio dos Bandeirantes. From that moment on, an effort to change the palace into a cultural center, with furniture, paintings and other objects of art, started. Laudo Natel was effectively the first governor to work daily in Bandeirantes Palace during his second term (1971-1975).

By order of Roberto Costa de Abreu Sodré, governor at that time, Luiz Arrobas Martins, secretary of finance, created a committee made up of art specialists: Oswald de Andrade Jr., Paulo Mendes de Almeida, Silvia Sodré Assunção, Marcelo Ciampolini and Pedro Antonio de Oliveira Neto. They acquired the first works of art that now belong to the Artistic-Cultural Collection of the Governmental Palaces.

Amongst theses works of art, panels by Antonio Henrique do Amaral, Clóvis Graciano, Candido Portinari, Djanira Motta e Silva, Tomie Ohtake, Alfredo Volpi and Aldemir Martins and paintings of Brazilian sceneries by Theodoro José da Silva Braga, Oscar Pereira da Silva, Benedito Calixto and Pedro Américo can be found.

In the others rooms, one can see pieces of art that depict a Brazil full of differences, as the series by Rubem Valentim, for instance, which shows black ethnic by using colors and symbols, and the one by José Cláudio da Silva, which depicts a trip to the Amazon region, unknown to most people.

Gardens

There are 2,000 trees spread over 125,000 square meters of garden area, which corresponds to 70% of the Palace’s total area: Pau Brazil, the Brazilian national tree, also known as Brazilwood, Yellow Ipê, flower simbol of Brazil, Pink Ipê, Queen Palm, Chestnut Tree, Lebanon Cedar, Tipuana, Pink Jequitiba, Cedrinho, Purple Glory Tree, Jatobá, Blue Jacaranda, Floss Silk Tree, Araucaria and Cherry Tree among others.

Besides the diversity of plants, 40 species of birds have already been identified in this garden area. Some examples are the Yellow and Black Woodpeckers, Southern Lapwing, Rufous Hornero, also known as Red Ovenbird, Rufous-collared Sparrow, Squirrel Cuckoo and the Rufous-bellied Thrush, officially chosen the national bird of Brazil as of 2002.
