Memorial do Imigrante

Memorial do Imigrante in São Paulo

Consolidated as a plural city, home to several nationalities, São Paulo has become, since 1870, the fate of many immigrants fleeing political and economic upheaval in their countries of origin - especially in Europe. The work on coffee farms has attracted many foreigners in search of a better life.

To get them opened in the late nineteenth century, an inn in the neighborhood of Brás. The immigrants landed at the port of Santos and were ascending the mountain by train to the station where stood the inn. To preserve this and many stories that suit the formation of the people of São Paulo, was created in 1998, the Immigrant Memorial.

The place is made by the Immigration Museum, the Center for Research and Documentation, the History Center and the Center for Transport Studies and Traditions. It brings together the records of everyone who walked by, listings that account for more than 60 ethnic groups. At that time, were met from three to eight thousand people per day. The collection contains about a thousand photographs, books and magazines. Documents from 1882 to 1907, 22% of the total, have been computerized. If you have a last name abroad in a few seconds can search the history of their ancestors. Or ask for help to the group of experts who seek the information manually.

The visitor also has the opportunity to take a trip back in time and relive the early twentieth century the streetcar rides and steam train. The railway station was rebuilt in place to house the path that goes to Mooca Street. We reconstituted the baggage car, the second passenger car class, 1900, and another first class of 1914, the former São Paulo Railway. For lovers of other times, every day is held on January 25 the "Meeting of Antique Cars." The site also contains an inner courtyard, an auditorium, gardens and a coffee plantation, where there is a small orchard and utensils used in the plantations.

The Immigrant Memorial is a great city and national treasure, as well as housing many nationalities that have adopted Brazil as their new home, keep a little of the history of men and women that helped make São Paulo a truly cosmopolitan city and has the diversity of its strengths.

The Immigrant Memorial, a museum tied to the Secretary of State for Culture, is in the process of restoration of the buildings until the second half of 2011.
