Rui Barbosa Square is a square located in the central city of Belo Horizonte. It is best known as Station Square to be located in front of the building of the old station of Central Railway of Brazil, now Museum of Arts and Crafts (MAO). The entrance to the Central Station of the Metro Belo Horizonte is also located in this square. [Edit] History It was the gateway to all the raw material used in building the new capital of Minas Gerais in the late nineteenth century. The city's first public clock was installed in the tower of the original building that housed the Railway Station. The square began to be urbanized in 1904, with English-style gardens. On November 11, 1922, opened the new building in eclectic style, designed by architect Luis Olivieri, to meet the demands of the bustling city and the design of the gardens around the square was changed to a French style. Since the movement of the Direct Elections Now, to this day the square is a space for demonstrations of all social strata. Poets, artists, state and the people are there to expose their ideas, dreams and fantasies. [Edit] Architecture Stand out in the square three sets of marble statues, one representing the four seasons, the other two lions and two tigers and a third set in a source of Nymphs. Across the square, the center of a terrace, there is the Monument to Civilization Mining (Mining Land), the work of Italian sculptor Giulio Starace, opened in 1930, granite plates, bronze, depicting the important facts of history Mining, topped with a statue of a male figure holding a flag, the same metal. They are part of the architectural heritage of the Sawmill Station Square Sousa Pinto, the viaducts of Santa Teresa and the Forest and the MAO. The square has been revitalized in early 2007 as part of the work of the Green Line. Being reconstituted the gardens, which had lost part of the format due to the expansion of Avenue Andradas in year 1960.
