Estadual do Rio Vermelho Park

The Parque Estadual do Rio Vermelho (PAERVE) is located on the east coast of Santa Catarina, in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina State. Its boundaries are the district of St. John the Red River to the north, the Lagoa da Conceicao in the west, the beach east of Mozambique and the district of Barra da Lagoa south.

The park was created in order to keep samples of Rain Forest (Mata Atlantica), salt marsh vegetation to conserve, preserve the fauna associated with the Atlantic Forest domain, maintaining the equilibrium of complex regional water resource, providing ecosystem recovery actions changed and provide the accomplishment of scientific research and public visitation.

The park area is 1,532 hectares and currently comprises 11% Rain Forest (Mata Atlantica), found in the Hill of the Apes, 54% sandbank with different heights and species composition and by 35% because of altered ecosystems planting and the invasion of pines and eucalyptus.

In 1962 the park area was defined as a Forest Station for the purpose of experimentation and identification of species most suitable to grow and protect the coastline of the state, mainly focusing on the setting of dunes, but also provide a green area for the population. During 12 years were planted several species of Pinus (pine-American) and Eucalyptus from different parts of the world, among other exotic species such as casuarina and acacia.

Today we know that the exotic species planted in the Red River State Park, with greater or lesser degree, are invasive species, highlighting the harmful effects of Pinus (pine-American). Studies are being conducted in the park designed to gather information for its environmental restoration. At the end of these studies will be withdrawn from sale and commercial wood of pine and eucalyptus, as well as the removal of all alien species in the park, as envisaged in the National System of Protected Areas - SNUG (Law 9.985/2000).

The region's subsoil PAERVE houses in the British-Red River aquifer, responsible for supplying water to the northern island of Santa Catarina. For this reason, conservation of the park contributes to the water recharge of the aquifer occurs without any hindrance and is free of contaminants.

In a recent survey conducted in the park were recorded 169 native plant species belonging to three types of sandbank - Herbal (66 species), shrubs (14 species) and trees (100 species). There is a plant species found in the area of ​​PAERVE, which was discovered in 1964 and has not found anywhere else in the world - it is the Mimosa catharinensis Burkart, a climbing shrub with presence of spines.

The park was recorded for the 106 species of wild birds and 15 reptile species, one being the-beach-lizards (Liolaemus occipitalis), a rare species, an endangered species that lives only in the dunes of the coast of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

There are currently 25 species of mammals on the island of Santa Catarina and the possibility that virtually all of them are found in PAERVE the wide variety of environments. In a recent survey in the park, by researchers at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, were seen footprints opossum (Didelphis aurita) and crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous). The monkey (Cebus nigritus) is found in the park and gives its name to Hill of the Monkeys.

Resides the environmental importance of the park has historical and cultural relevance. One of the oldest shell middens on the island of Santa Catarina, dated 5020 years before present, is located within the park. The District of St. John the Red River, located on the northern boundary of the park is one of the oldest in Florianopolis, and officially established in 1831.

This conservation area while protecting important natural areas, has in its interior areas where activities have historically been developed for public use, including a camping area with a structure created for guests and visitors during the summer.

Information on camping in Red River:

- Camping is 41,000 m² green area in the middle, where it provides structure for camping with tent, trailer or motor home. It has male and female toilets, grills, electricity, covered area for dining table, ping-pong, volleyball court and soccer field, parking for visitors, access trail to the beach (about 400m).

The 2010/2011 season of the Red River Camping will begin on December 23, 2010 and will end on March 15, 2011.

The daily rate per person (for tent, caravan or motorhome) will be:
- $ 15.00 to stay 1-5 days;
- $ 12.00 to stay 6-20 days;
- $ 10.00 for a stay of more than 20 days.

Children under 7 not pay.

Visitors will be charged R$ 5.00 per person.

The reception will run from 08:00 to 22:00 and payment must be made on arrival and in cash. Recalling that will not be permitted entry of new campers at other times.
