Balneário Beach in Florianopolis

Located on the northern mainland of Florianópolis, the beach is roughly 1 mile long and formely known as " Barreiros´ " and now known by several names, including Praia do Balneário, Praia do Estreito or even Praia do Balneário do Estreito.  The beach offers a wide view to the right of Avenida Beira-Mar Norte, of small islands in the North Bay and the Hercílio Luz Bridge and to the left, the continental vision, including the city of Biguaçu.

Until 1943 the area belonged to the nearby city of Florianópolis, and considered part of Barreiros.  It was named "District of João Pessoa" according to the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the capital. After the date, Barreiros became the district of João Pessoa.

Unfortunately, the beach is known for smelling bad and still has excessive pollution even though in the 90's it received treatment to try and clean it up.  It is still unfit for bathing.
