Praca dos Leoes

In 1831 the "Palace Square" was planned and then the square begins to be urbanized being inaugurated in 1856. After the death of General Tiburcio Antonio Ferreira de Sousa, hero of the War of Paraguay in 1885, the first public statue of the city was erected in his honor on the square in 1888.

The General Tiburcio square or as it is popularly called the Lion Square is a square in the city of Fortaleza. The name is in honor of Tiburcio Antonio Ferreira de Sousa in recognition of his participation in political and military campaigns in the platinum region. On April 8, 1888 was inaugurated a monument to General Tiburcio, the first to be erected in Fortaleza.

Around the square are the Museum of Ceará and Ceará Academy of Arts. There are several other statues in the square highlighting the three statues of lions and life-size statue of the writer Rachel Queiroz sitting on a bench. The square design features regular geometry, characteristic of the neoclassical period, and its construction dated 1887. The flooring is cemented in with natural color and reddish in the tables of the central square, surrounded with an iron fence along the General Bezerril street and the buildings of the Igreja do Rosário and Palácio da Luz. Alongisde the São Paulo and Sena Madureira streets there are concrete railing based on small pillars. The banks are made of wood and iron, the support of the floor. In the center of the square stands the monument of General Tiburcio and at the confluence of the St. Paul streets and Sena Madureira, monuments with huge lions.

General Tiburcio Square, XIX century remote construction is, with its surrounding buildings: Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Palace of Light and the Legislative Assembly, an important architectural, urban, historic environmental complex which depicts different eras of history and facts of Ceará.
