Canto do Mangue
Beside the neighborhood of Ribeira, is Canto do Mangue which is another picturesque Natal destination and also a central place for selling fish and seafood. The whole area is managed by the fishermen themselves and those who sell, prepare and cook fish. There are roughly 300 fishermen in the area with about 50 boats at the docks between Rocas and Ribeira. The fishermen bring in plenty of delicacies, including lobster, shrimp, octopus and various tropical fish. The fishmarket itself consists of 32 kiosks, with 24 dedicated to selling fish and the rest dedicated to a food court. Visitors can enjoy the Canto do Mangue, a traditional delicacy in a genuinely traditional spot, or try the Ginga, a small fish served fried and accompanied by tapioca.
In the sunset square, many of the old fish market stalls were demolished and replaced with a huge modern strucutre with benches, bins and a couple of kiosks selling tapioca with fried fish. The area is well landscaped with flower gardens, and native trees such as the mororó, coconut, mignonette, among others. A gazebo with tables for games, a paved flagstone granite path, and a view of the Potengi River make this place a rather cute destination to visit.
