Held each November at Alfândega Square in Porto Alegre during the month of October, the 'Feira to Livro', as it is known in Brazilian Portuguese, is the largest Book Fair of South America, and has been taking place since 1955. It is very common for authors to be at booths signing their new novels. There are usually arts and crafts, as well as local food, being sold during the event. There are even spontaneous poetry reading and theater play taking place during the bookfair.

Every year, almost 2,000,000 people attend the fair, buying and trading books. Several schools from all over the state of Rio Grande do Sul have excursions to visit this tremendous festival. Porto Alegre's famous Bookfair is definitely a great place to pick up books in Portuguese and expand your library of foreign books!
