Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana in Porto Alegre

This 'house of culture' named after Porto Alegre's greatest poet, Mario Quintana, offers a plethora of cultural activities that take place in its many galleries, spaces, libraries, theaters, and cinemas. There is always something going on: an art exhibit, a local theater play, an alternative European film, dance and music performances, you name it. There are also cafes and coffee shops.

The house, with its rosy walls and its 5+ stories, may be simply contemplated for its majestic architecture. Even if you do not plan on attending any of the cultural artsy activities that may be going on, it is a building worth-visiting.

The Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana is an institution linked to the Ministry of Culture and State government of Rio Grande do Sul. The history of the Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana started in July 1980 with the purchase of the former building of the Hotel Majestic, by Banrisul during the government of governor Amaral de Souza. The deal was done so that the state government could buy it, because the government lacked sufficient resources to cover the actual value.

On December 29, 1982, the state government acquired the Majestic Banrisul and a year later, the building was enrolled as a historic site, starting from then its transformation into the House of Culture. In the same year, through the law of 8 July 7803, it was named Mario Quintana, becoming part of the then Secretariat of State for Culture. Traditional spaces of Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana are the the movie theater, music, visual arts, dance, theater, literature, workshops and events related to culture.
