Mercado Sao Jose

It is the oldest building prefabricated iron in Brazil, exported from Europe to Recife, in the late nineteenth century.

It was designed by the engineer of the Municipality of Recife, J. Lieuthier Louis in 1871, inspired by Marketing de Grenelle, Paris, and built by French engineer Louis Léger Vauthier, also responsible for the construction of St. Elizabeth doTeatro.

Today, with its 46 pavilions, 561 magazines and 80 boxes covered in your outdoor area, plus 24 more for the fish, crustaceans and 12 to 80 for meat and fruit, the market of San Jose is a place where the best of regional crafts, ethnic foods, brochures twine, medicinal herbs, items for african-Brazilian cults, and also an important supply center in the neighborhood of San Jose and a tourist attraction in the city of Recife.

The Market of San Jose was inaugurated in 1875 and has the same neoclassical architecture of European markets at the time. This is a major municipal markets. Their boxes open daily, 542 in total, have a huge diversity of products and services: clothes, fruits, meats, brochures twine, products of Umbanda and Candomble, shells and tarot games and more. What's more, for those who want a souvenir photo, photographers have the tradicionalíssimos "lick-lick", is almost extinct.
