Valdemar de Oliveira Theater

Opened in 1971, this theater has great deal of setbacks.   Several locations where initially chosen, only to be marked off as unsuitable for various reasons, with one location being expropriated by the government of Pernambuco to build the Public Library.  The theater was built by the Amateur Theater of Pernambuco, led by Valdemar de Oliveira.  The final destination for the house was at the Oswaldo Cruz Square, where it opened on May 23, 1971.   Upon the founders death, the theater group changed its name to Theatre Valdemar de Oliveira to honor him, on the sixth year it was completed, May 23, 1977.   On October 19, 1980 a fire destroyed the premises of the theater, and much time was spent restoring it to it's original glory, only being reopened on December 20, 1987.  For the festival of rededication, the theater was able to attract the attentions of the famous actor Paulo Autran, who attended the event.
