Brazilians just love Italian food! Italian meals are popular and in great demand due to the huge population of Italian descendants in the country. Many areas of southern Brazil communicate only in Italian. Most of these Italians traveled to Brazil in the 1800's and yet still maintain traditions and culture from Italy even after all of these years! These areas normally have the finest Italian food, but competition has maintained the quality of food high everywhere.
Restaurants in Brazil are frequently setup to handle lunch time diners rather than the typical dinner time diners. This drastically changes how they serve dishes, and how they price their food. Many lunch time diners are looking for a fairly simple eating experience, with a hearty and reasonably quick meal. Hot buffets offer them this by having various hot dishes ready. Pricing is usually by weight or an all-you-can-eat model, most places have both options available.
Sandwiches are considered a snack and not a proper meal! Therefore restaurants typically serve up hot and nutritious dishes for lunch instead of the typical North American light style lunches.
Meals are usually served and eaten on premises, but many dining establishments also offer take-out and food delivery services. Of course the establishments vary greatly in appearance and offerings, including a wide variety of cuisines.
For Brazilians it is very prevalent to go back home for lunch to have their meal with their family members. This isn’t always viable, particularly in the larger metropolitan areas, so restaurants have used this opportunity and designed a business model around catering to these individuals. In many of the considerably smaller cities it can be problematic to find a traditional sit down and order off the menu style business.
