São João Fortress / São José Fort History The city of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro made on 1 March 2005, 440 years old. The History of the City of Rio de Janeiro, in its infancy, is intertwined with the history of Brazil, embodied and perpetuated through its monuments, forts and buildings restored and preserved. On March 1, 1565, Estacio de Sá founded in Urca, between the Hills Face Dog and Sugar Loaf, the City of Rio de Janeiro. In this same place was built the fortress of St. John, consisting of three redoubts (small forts also called battery) and a large fort, Fort St. Joseph, 1578 - the third oldest fort in the country. In 1872, the Fort St. Joseph was completely refurbished and equipped in order of D. Pedro II, as a result of the episode known as "Question Christie." After a monumental work, the new Fort St. Joseph was given a set of 17 bunkers built in stone masonry, topped by railings and platforms all in granite. The set was supplemented by a large vaulted barn, proof of weapons of the time. It was equipped with 15 anti-loading Whitworth guns caliber 75 mm in bunkers and 20 guns of smaller caliber. Many historians say that the Rio de Janeiro exists today, thanks to the principal defenses of Fort St. Joseph, strategically located at the entrance of Guanabara Bay. Resort-cultural After more than one hundred years, the Fort St. Joseph is being restored with the support of Rouanet Law for the Encouragement of Culture. The first two phases of the restoration was sponsored by BNDES. Now in its third phase, the goal is the restoration of the cannons of the century. Visitors can also choose to see the Face of Ham Hill, considered an Environmental Preservation Area by IBAMA, or visit the Sports Museum of the Army, as the Fortress was the first Physical Training Center in Brazil. It is the ideal place for locals and visitors know the place where the founding of the city where it all started, and feel the charm of living history that is still in place.
