Probably the most famous beach in the world, Ipanema Beach is an urban beach that has a broad band of soft sand, with relatively strong waves.  The beach is a major tourist draw and therefore hotels run the entire length of the beach.  Locals and tourists flock to the beach year round, and with all of its nightime lighting, beach goers stay well into the evening every night.

Across the famous sidewalk that borders Ipanema Beach, there are showers and toilets in the lifeguard stations.  In front of Ipanema Beach is the island of Palmas and Cagarras which are places suitable for diving and spearfishing and beyond Long Island, Rasa and Redonda.  To get to the islands, boats can be rented boats at the Gloria Marina in Marina Square or in Urca.
