History
In a nutshell the architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907) sums up his project for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niterói (MAC-Niterói): "The ground was narrow, surrounded by the sea and the solution came naturally, taking as its starting point the central support inevitable. Him, architecture occurred spontaneously as a flower. The sea view was beautiful and it was to take it. and suspend the building and beneath it stretched the picture even richer. Then define the profile of the museum. A line rises from the ground and grow without interruption and unfolds, sensual, even coverage. The shape of the building, which always imagined circular, settled, and inside I stopped in love. Around the museum created a gallery open to the sea, repeating it on the second floor as a mezzanine overlooking the large exhibition hall. "

The building - construction starts in 1991, the first administration of Mayor Jorge Roberto Silveira, when Italo Campofiorito secretary of Culture - is the first work that the museum offers to contemplation. Located on top of Lookout Boa Viagem, in the city of Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, the line structure of the circular building looks like a sculpture 16 feet tall in open square in the mirror put on waterline its base and the lighting used attach great lightness. The ramp leads to the external winding interior with two floors. On the second floor are the showroom and panoramic balcony, glass, also reserved for shows. The mezzanine, in turn, that surrounds the entire interior of the museum is divided into smaller rooms for exhibitions. In the basement, are an area for storage of works, a bar, a restaurant and an auditorium for conferences.

Work maturity, the MAC-Niterói project reveals the daring of an experienced artist, responsible for a production that presents a very personal reading of the precepts of rationalist architecture of Le Corbusier matrix. The core principles of the method of urban work and philosophy of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier (1887-1965) - the rational use of materials, cost effective methods of construction, formal language without ornaments and systematic dialogue with industrial technology - such as known, will have a strong influence on modern Brazilian architecture, mainly because of successive Swiss architect coming from Brazil.

The building of the Ministry of Education and Health (now the Palace Gustavo Capanema) is the most obvious proof of the attempt by a group led by Brazilian architect Lucio Costa (1902-1998), and which is part Niemeyer, to incorporate the precepts of rational Le Corbusier's architecture. The great freedom of design of plastic Niemeyer - who follow the program steps of Le Corbusier, but often against the rationalist geometry by the use of columns in "V" and "W", arches and domes, curved lines, rolling and drawing sinuous forms - is visible in youth projects, for example, the plan which he performs with Lucio Costa, Brazil Pavilion at the International Exhibition of New York in 1939. At the Grand Hotel de Ouro Preto, 1940, in turn, Niemeyer explores the dialogue of its architecture with the environment (with the natural landscape and the buildings of the colonial city of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais), a dialogue that will be enhanced throughout the Pampulha, Belo Horizonte and the MAC-Niterói.

The idea of creating the museum, according to Roberto da Silveira, arises from the intention of John Leo Sattamini Neto to donate his art collection to the city. And the museum is born precisely to house it. Begun in 1966, when Sattamini resides in Italy, the collection of almost 1,200 works is defined as one of the most significant collections of art produced in Brazil between 1950 and 1990. Part of the collection a considerable number of sculptures - Frans Krajcberg (1921) to Ivens Machado (1942) - a large sum of works by artists of concreteness and Neoconcretism - Ivan Serpa (1923-1973), Aluisio Coal (1920 - 2001), Lygia Clark (1920-1988) and others more directly related to the informal abstraction - works by artists who pass by the groups - Mira Schendel (1919-1988) and Ione Saldanha (1919-2001) - the works generation connected to the Opinion 65 - Antonio Dias (1944) and Carlos Vergara (1941) - as well as assemblages of Raymundo Colares (1944-1986), Dionisio Del Santo (1925-1999) and Jorge Guinle (1947-1987). Artists Generation 80 - Daniel Senise (1955) and Manfredo de Souzanetto (1947) - the group of seven House, and names that stand out in the 1990 - Ernesto Neto (1964) and Paulo Pasta (1959) - make up the . It is with some of these works that the MAC-Niterói opens its doors in 1996 with the conference in Brazilian Contemporary Art Collection John Sattamini. Since its inauguration, the museum holds regular exhibitions dedicated to the collection Sattamini as Sattamini Collection: Materials to Internal Differences (2000), Sattamini Paintings Collection (2000), Modern and Contemporary (2001), Sculpture and Objects (2002) . The creation of this museum in Niterói puts tourist route of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and starts the project - already underway - "Niemeyer Way", which encompasses different constructs.

A highlight of the MAC-Niterói is the division of art education, which aims to develop strategies for communicative interaction with contemporary art. The purpose of education is evident in the museum space for visitors in each exhibition. A series of games aimed at broadening relations between art, culture and education, it is proposed to a diverse audience. In addition, guided tours, activities for families on weekends and special programs for teachers and pupils fall in the same spirit that guides the trainer strategies "communication" of the museum. Inside the MAC project / community (with support from the Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social - BNDES), highlight the Arts Environmental Action Project, implemented in 1999 with young Hill's Palace, in Niterói. Paper craft workshops, games neoconcrete, texts, graffiti, community journalism, among others, offer arts education, youth vocational environmental and low income.
