Expressions of Catholic origin held since 1549, when the first governor general of Brazil, Tomé de Sousa, started his devotion in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao da Praia - whose stone facade of limestone came from Portugal.
The festivities start in late November, with the novena that happens every night in the matrix, the Lower City. The celebration involves an outdoor Mass and procession, and in parallel, there is the traditional feast of Largo (broad), near the Mercado Modelo, with stalls selling typical food and drink, combining the joy of the profane to the sacred devotion Bahia mysticism.
Salvador is the feast day for Our Lady. She is the patroness of the state. The celebration of Bahia is not only in church. Bahia is the land of religious syncretism, so today is also day to honor Our Lady of Conception, patroness of Bahia, and also Oshun, Queen of fresh water deity of beauty and love.
Throughout the day on December 8), sectors of Candomblé gather in front of the basilica to pay their respects. The adherents of religion give us devoted herbal baths, a sign of open roads and bring good energy.
This religious syncretism is also marks the celebrations in other states. Adored and revered by Catholics by the followers of Candomblé religious syncretism in the Immaculate Conception is Oshun, Orisha of fresh water.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Conception of the beach was constructed with precast stone brought from Portugal. Devotion to Our Lady of Conception in Salvador is intertwined with the history of Bahia.
It all started exactly a small chapel, which stands beside the present church was erected by Thomas and de Souza soon as he arrived to found Salvador in 1549. The main walls are preserved and the place is still very busy. On site, the faithful light candles in honor of Our Lady.
