Pateo do Collegio

Pateo do Collegio

Amid the skyscrapers and the effervescence of business occurring in the city, the center also holds the Pateo do Collegio, the birthplace of what became one of the largest in the world.

It was the place that St. Paul State was born, from the construction of a small hut of mud-and-straw house where 13 Jesuits, including Father Jose de Anchieta and Manoel da Nobrega met, committed to convert the natives. At the time perched on a hill and surrounded by the Anhangabaú Tamanduateí and the place called Vila Sao Paulo Piratininga, was a strategic security.

The official ceremony of the founding of the city occurred on January 25, 1555. This is also the date of conversion of the apostle Paul, who originated the name of the capital. In December 1556 the house was enlarged to house the college of Jesuits. With the expulsion of religious given in 1759 by the Marquis of Pombal, the Pateo the college became the Palace of the Governors in the years 1765 and 1908. At that time most of the collection of the church was lost due to a collapse.

The site did not return to its original vocation between 1932 and 1953, when it was transformed into Ministry of Education. In 1954 the Jesuits began the reconstruction project of the college, which only ended in 1979 with the founding of the Museum of Church and Padre Anchieta Anchieta Bl.

Today the complex is home to cultural activities. The museum, composed of seven rooms, exposes collections of religious art, an art gallery, Indian objects, a model of St. Paul in the sixteenth century, the font and former belongings of Anchieta, among other things.

The visitor can also know the Father Antonio Vieira Library, where a precious collection of history books, and participate in the Mass said by the Jesuits. There are also conducted conferences, courses, workshops, crafts and painting and presentation of classical music in the project Pateo Come to Sunday, which takes place every third Sunday of the month.

As one of the main symbols of the history of São Paulo, the place still retains the original spelling of the archaic Portuguese. Travel back in time warp and be surprised with the start of the career of one of the most important cities in Latin America.
