Luz Station in São Paulo

Open to the public on 1 March 1901, the Light Station occupies 7500 square meters of the Garden of Light, where the structures are brought over from England to copy the Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. There was no opening, since the traffic was being moved slowly, but it did not take long for the new city landmark was considered a living room in Sao Paulo. All the famous personalities who had the capital as a destination were forced to land at the site. Businessmen, intellectuals, politicians, diplomats and kings were welcomed in its lobby and went to say goodbye there.

This railway station became a gateway for immigrants as well, promoting the small village of troops to a major metropolis. This importance given to the Sao Paulo Railway Station, as it was officially known, lasted until the end of World War II. By this period, transport by railways were being replaced by planes, buses and cars, much faster than trains.

In 1982 the architectural complex of the Light Station was listed by the Council of Defense of the Historical, Artistic, Archaeological and Tourism (Condephaat). The station also houses the Museum of the Portuguese language (10378), a cultural institution with the Secretariat of Culture of São Paulo, opened in 2006.
