Sala São Paulo

The imposing building of the railroad Sorocabana now houses the Sala Sao Paulo, home of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra and one of the most important concert and event house in the country.

Designed by Christiano Stockler das Neves in 1925 - period when the city, fueled by coffee and the railroad, grew at a rapid pace.

The building, which is marked by sobriety and details of the ornaments of the Louis XVI style, was only completed in 1938, when the urbanization of São Paulo was already characterized by the presence of cars, minimizing the use of trams and trains.

Sala São Paulo is part of the Julio Prestes Complex. Its restoration project was awarded by the 2000 USITT - United States Institute for Theatre Technology. It is one of the most modern and well-equipped concert halls in the world. The reform of the Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra headquarters lasted a year and a half and cost R$ 44 millions. The great hall of the Júlio Prestes Complex was the focus of the project designed by the government Mário Covas. The room follows the latest technical and acoustical parameters. The major technological innovation was the construction of a mobile roof, formed by plates that can be lowered or raised to adjust the sound quality, according to the type of music being played. With a capacity of 1,484 seats, the room also has 22 cabins.

A National Heritage, located in downtown, neighboring the State Art Gallery and the Museum of Sacred Art, Sala São Paulo was inaugurated on July 9, 1999 with the presentation by the Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra of the Resurrection Symphony, Gustav Mahler, and is one most important landmark of the city.
